The Volunteer Guide category is for individuals who generously give their time and skills to guide tours without receiving payment.
It is available to people who:

  • currently volunteer as a tour guide with organisations such as the National Trust, galleries, museums, Botanic Gardens, National Parks, community centres, or similar institutions

  • do not receive a wage or salary for your guiding work

  • are passionate about sharing stories, culture, history or the natural environment with the public

STUDENT

The Student category is designed for individuals who are currently studying and are interested in exploring a career in tour guiding.
It is available to people who:

  • are currently enrolled in a high school, TAFE or university course related to travel and tourism, history, languages or geography
  • have an interest in working as a Tour Guide — whether part-time while you study or as a future career path
  • are keen to build connections within the guiding industry and gain valuable insights from experienced professionals

Student Membership

$50per annum
  • (GST free)

TAFE graduates receive a free 12 months affiliate membership at the end of their course.

IATG BENEFITS for AFFILIATES

Affiliate members receive:

  • regular famils, lectures, workshops and social functions

  • access to informative IATG emails and quarterly IATG Welcome newsletters

  • networking opportunities with experienced Tour Guides and tourism operators

  • discounted business insurance recommended for freelance tour guides

  • access to an IATG Mentor offering help and guidance with the tasks that guides are required to do. This free service is available to all IATG Professional and Affiliate Guides. IATG has created a mentoring body of guides who are experienced in many areas, are patient and have a great understanding of the problems faced by guides today. Our mentors are available to talk through specific guiding problems and advise members how best to handle situations, either for immediate reference or as a future suggestion for a problem they’ve already encountered.

The Affiliate Membership is available to people who:

  • are currently undertaking training to be a Guide

  • have recently graduated from training

  • have not yet gained sufficient work experience as a Guide to meet the Professional membership criteria

  • are interested in seeking work as a Guide

  • work as volunteer Guides or are retired Guides

Affiliate Membership

$175per annum

Note: Many Affiliate Members progress to Professional Membership when they have obtained enough experience as a working tour guide. Membership is for a 12-month period and is renewable if you are not yet eligible to apply for Professional Membership

  • a membership photo ID card
  • access to professionally printed IATG business cards, that identify members as Professional Tour Guides
  • discounted and complimentary admission to various tourist attractions and cultural centres
  • a voice in quality, training, professional development and general tourism issues through IATG’s links with government and industry bodies
  • access to an IATG Mentor offering help and guidance with the tasks that guides are required to do. This free service is available to all IATG Professional and Affiliate Guides. IATG has created a mentoring body of guides who are experienced in many areas, are patient and have a great understanding of the problems faced by guides today. Our mentors are available to talk through specific guiding problems and advise members how best to handle situations, either for immediate reference or as a future suggestion for a problem they’ve already encountered.

The Professional Membership is for those who:

  • are qualified and experienced tour guides

  • are currently working in the industry

they must also:

  • be a permanent resident of Australia

  • be fluent in English to conduct the application interview

  • be sufficiently experienced in working as a tour guide (200+ hours would be a guideline)

  • currently work regularly in a full-time or part-time capacity as a tour guide and receive remuneration for their work

  • hold a current First Aid certificate and Working With Children Check

  • satisfy requirements outlined in the Professional Points system, 8 points required for renewal of membership each year. Click here for examples on how to gain points.

  • agree to abide by the Code of Guiding Practice

Professional NSW Member

$250per annum
  • (GST free)
  • $20 discount if paid before 30th June yearly

Professional Non-NSW Member

$140per annum

Professional Regional Member

$140per annum

  • Living 100kms or more from a CBD
  • Joining fee: $60 (one off)
  • When upgrading from an Affiliate membership* to Professional Membership:
    • Jul-Sep full professional membership less 25% of affiliate fee paid
    • Oct-Dec full professional membership less 50% of affiliate fee paid
    • Jan-Mar full professional membership less 75% of affiliate fee paid
  • Get a $20 credit for referring a new member
  • Please be advised that we will charge $60 ‘re-joining’ fee to any Member who pay annual fees after 31 July or whose membership has lapsed
